Compulsory vote in the second round of elections for Regional Governors
Voting is mandatory since January 3, 2023, date on which Law No. 21,524 was published in the official gazette, which modifies the fundamental charter to reestablish mandatory voting in popular elections. According to the law, the excuses for not voting this Sunday are:
- Being sick.
- Being absent from the country or in a locality located more than 200 kilometers away from the polling place,
- Or not being able to comply with your obligation due to another serious impediment duly accredited.
In the case of being more than 200 km away from the polling place, and only in this circumstance, the voter may leave a record in Carabineros only on the same day of the election. It is very important to keep the proof of the record, since it will have to be presented before the Local Police Judge when attending the summons that will arrive later.
For the other excuses defined by law, the voter must wait to be summoned by the Local Police Court and present the documentation corresponding to his or her justification, which will be weighed by the Judge according to his or her criteria.
Fine
The law establishes that whoever does not vote in the Regional Elections will be denounced by Servel and risks a municipal fine of 0.5 monthly tax units, that is $33,280, as determined by the Local Police Judge.
